Buy from the Private Collection and support locally owned businesses. The Chronicle’s recent coverage about small business pointed out that local retailers re-circulate far more dollars back into the economy than chain stores – add to that the quality of their unique products and their contribution to the local community and you can’t help but think that buying local is the smart way to shop. Your purchase from our Private Collection will help raise the profile of women-owned businesses and create futures for low-income women and their communities. PICK OF THE MONTH

In an effort to connect you with some of our terrific clients and their businesses, we have added a “Pick of the Month” section that will feature businesses frequented by a staff member. Enjoy!

Julie’s Picks of the Month
Everywhere I go people comment on my jewelry, small backpack, and my gorgeous knitwear. Tara Acevedo (Treasures by Tara) has a wonderful eye for putting together unique, artistic and tasteful jewelry that matches my style. It is a little dangerous when Tara comes to Women’s Initiative to show off her wares because I always buy some of the beautifully strung stones and silver. One of my favorite things about Treasures by Tara is that they’ll customize jewelry if you have something in mind. For example, I have light green eyes and she made me a piece that matches me perfectly!

My next pick is Beatnik Bags, run by graduate Louise Bartlett, because people across the country have asked me about my stylish, durable purse that doubles as a backpack with its unique rope straps. One of my favorite details of the bag is the luxurious lining which makes me feel spoiled!

“That top is stunning on you!” exclaimed my very honest and sometimes critical friend. I knew she was telling the truth because I felt great in my deep red knit creation by Jen Armstrong of JAK Designs. The yarns she uses are so special they put the touch sensory on overload! Her knitwear also drapes well on so many different body types.

GRADUATE NEWS

Marking One Year in Business
Connie Rivera, Mixcoatl Arts and Crafts (24th and S. Van Ness, San Francisco), celebrated her one year anniversary of being in business. To mark the milestone she held a party in November at the store with performances by Aztec dancers in front of a crowd of 60-100 people. After the dancing, the festivities continued with pre-Hispanic Oaxacan music including drumming by one of Women’s Initiative’s newest staff members Morgan Elizabeth Simon, Research and Evaluation Coordinator. Connie Rivera was just featured in The Chronicle. CLICK HERE to read the full story (Chronicle 11/29/2005).
